High-Demand Majors Application Process
► Student’s academic advisor will monitor and provide guidance as to the term and timeframe that is appropriate to consider making application.
► Student who anticipate applying through the high-demand major (HDM) application are encouraged to attend information sessions about HDM that are held early each term (see timeline below).
► The initial step in the application process is to complete the Personal Statement of Purpose. The PSOP must be written at the University’s Testing Center. Please see the UGA Testing Center's website to make an appointment.
► The University Testing Center provides a list of all students who complete the personal statement of purpose during the timeframe noted for each term. Based on that list, each potential HDM applicant will be contacted by the College of Engineering Academic Office via UGA email with the HDM application link.
► To complete the application, students will provide information including major of choice and self-reported grades in the General Education and Major Specific courses for evaluation.
- Grades will be verified from Athena and DegreeWorks
- Grades for courses in progress during the term of application will be added to the student’s application after grades are processed that term.
- If an applicant has repeated a course, the highest grade earned in multiple attempts will be considered.
- For transfer students, the course equivalent to a UGA course should be reported and will be verified by the Academic Office prior to application review.
- A grade of C or higher should be earned in all Major Specific courses to be successful in the application process.
► Applicants will be notified via email regarding acceptance or denial following review.
► Once accepted to the major students will need to request a formal major change through ATHENA.
► Applicants denied admission to the major of their choice may re-apply one additional time for admission in a later semester. There is no appeals process.

What if I miss the application deadline?
No late applications are accepted. Students who miss the deadline will need to apply at the next opportunity.
Can I apply if I am completing one or more of the required courses in the term in which I am applying?
Yes you can be completing courses in the term you are applying. Grades from those courses will be added to your application once grades are posted for the term.
I am a transfer student. When can I apply?
Upon acceptance to the University, a transfer student is welcome to contact the Academic Office to determine if you have already completed the required courses. If you have or will have the courses completed in the term prior to transfer to UGA, a transfer student may submit a HDM major application. Arrangements for completion of the Personal Statement of Purpose need to be made with the Academic Office in sufficient time to meet the close deadline for completing the PSOP at the UGA Testing Center.
If I withdraw from a required course after completing the PSOP but before the application is submitted, what happens?
The student should not submit the application. The completed PSOP will not be graded. And, the student would need to complete another PSOP during a future term he/she plans to apply. This situation does not count as one of the two allowed attempts to apply.
Can I withdraw my application after grades are posted if I do not wish for that application to be counted as one of the two application attempts?
Effective in the fall 2019 application cycle, a first-time HDM applicant is able to withdraw his/her application from being evaluated for acceptance. All eligible applicants will receive a link to the required withdrawal form on the first day of finals. Applicants who wish to withdraw an application must complete the form no later than two business days after the grades are posted in Athena. These dates will be communicated to the HDM applicants during the finals week every semester. The withdrawn application will not be considered as one of the two application attempts allowed in the HDM process.
There is no option to withdraw an application if the student has previously submitted an HDM application and was not admitted by the College.
I completed some of the required courses via Advanced Placement. How does that impact my application?
The University does not attach a grade to courses awarded via Advanced Placement or similar credit options. With no grade, these courses have a neutral impact on the GPA’s calculated as part of the review process.
What grade is considered if I repeat a course?
The College follows the same protocol for grade posting by the Registrar’s Office. The most recently received grade will be used in the GPA calculations.
What happens during the application process?
We will review your grades in both required General Education and Major Specific courses as well as your personal statement of purpose. Grades for your most recent semester are generally available the week after final exams. Following this review, a decision on your application will be communicated to you via e-mail from the College of Engineering Academic Office.
If I am not admitted, what should I do?
Students may retake required courses to improve their GPA and may re-apply for admission one additional time in a later semester. When re-applying, you are required to submit a new Personal Statement of Purpose. In addition, you may consult your academic advisor for next steps or contact an advisor at the UGA Exploratory Center for other options.
