Jason Christian, an assistant professor in the University of Georgia College of Engineering, has been named 2017 Civil Engineer of the Year by the Georgia Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
Georgia ASCE honored Christian for his outstanding contributions to the engineering profession, the organization and his community during its annual awards ceremony Aug. 26 in Atlanta.
“ASCE members, and engineers in general, include the best and brightest minds working tirelessly to make our communities healthy, sustainable and livable. Being regarded by my peers as deserving of this award for my work developing the next generation of UGA engineers is truly a special honor,” said Christian.
At the College of Engineering, Christian draws on more than 20 years of experience as a practicing engineer in the private sector to present realistic career expectations to undergraduates.
“My goal is to create a learning experience that helps students develop confidence in their individual character and not just their technical abilities,” said Christian. “I also want help students understand their role in the professional work place, appreciate the interdisciplinary nature of current engineering design problems and develop their entrepreneurial instincts.”
Christian’s research focuses on unsteady and uncertain hydrologic and hydraulic systems, water resource management, floodplain delineation and analysis, and analysis of the reliability and interdependence of infrastructure systems.
An active member of ASCE at the state and local level, Christian serves the ASCE Georgia Section as a director on its board of directors and the ASCE Northeast Georgia Branch as treasurer.
Christian earned a doctorate in environmental engineering from Rice University. He received a master’s of engineering and a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Texas A&M University.
