What is your favorite thing about being a student at UGA?
My favorite thing about being a student at UGA is the amount of activities available for us. I sometimes take for granted that I have so many opportunities to improve my professionalism, meet other students, and just have fun. I’m trying my best to explore everything — from going to club events to studying all around campus.
Why did you choose engineering?
I chose engineering because I truly want to be in an environment where I can bring things to life. I crave tangibility. I also think it gives me a purpose to help the world somehow. I don’t know exactly which direction I’ll take yet, but I know that engineering feels right for me because it allows me to create and make an impact.
Why is it important for the university to have an inclusive community?
Having an inclusive community gives underrepresented students a voice. It takes into account situations that people might never have heard of. It’s beneficial and interesting for UGA students to come from different backgrounds. It also helps upcoming students not feel discouraged, because they’ll know it’s possible to be successful and achieve great things.
What has been the greatest challenge you have faced while at UGA, and how did you overcome it?
The greatest challenge has been learning not to be too hard on myself and realizing it’s okay not to have everything figured out. It’s okay not to be the best. It’s more important to have a good mindset and to give the best you can, even on your worst days.

What have you learned that has made a difference for you?
Dr. Nettie Brown worded time management perfectly for me: “Time management is like juggling glass and rubber balls. Decide which ones can be dropped and which can’t.” It really stuck with me and helped me focus on where I should prioritize my time.
Who has helped you become a successful student at UGA?
I want to thank my mom, God, my family, my mentors from LISTO, SHPE, First Gen Dawgs, and ALPFA, Spotify, and anyone who has talked to me. They eased me into college with a strong support system and gave me the courage to ask for help. If I’ve had one conversation with you, you’ve helped me — because there’s a good chance I learned something from it.
What is your favorite spot on campus and why?
I like Bolton because it gives me a chance to slow down, enjoy a meal, and reset between classes. It’s a space where I can turn my brain off for a moment and recharge.

What has been your favorite class at UGA?
All my classes have been great with a little struggle here and there. I’m still exploring what I enjoy most, but each class has taught me something valuable.
What has been your best memory at UGA?
I appreciate those days when there are free events with food and dogs to pet around the Tate Center as I walk to my next class.
What advice do you have for younger students who wish to pursue engineering?
You can do it. Just care about what you learn and grow your network. Please help a peer if you see them struggling — it can go a long way. I’m not sure how I got this opportunity to share about myself, but I know it’s thanks to someone who saw something in me and said, “I choose Samuel for Extraordinary Engineer.”
How do you hope to impact society with your engineering degree?
I hope to work in product design or human-centered engineering, developing innovative consumer technology and interactive experiences that bring people joy and convenience.
