From developing novel medical devices to strengthening industry partnerships, University of Georgia researchers are helping shape the future of biomedical engineering and education– work that’s being recognized state-wide.
In a new education and healthcare feature, “Where Bio Meets Tech,” Georgia Trend Magazine highlights ongoing biomedical engineering innovation and research across the state.
One researcher highlighted is UGA College of Engineering professor Eduardo Silva, chair of the School of Chemical, Materials and Biomedical Engineering.
Dr. Silva’s lab combines materials science, cell biology and engineering to develop medical solutions and devices, such as a forthcoming nonhormonal contraceptive ring. BME students at UGA often pursue industry careers in medical technology, but Silva believes in developing a wider range of biomedical professionals.
“We cannot be an island,” he expressed to Georgia Trend. “We need to be open, not close ourselves into our silos, which is a common issue in academia. At the same time, universities play a critical role in leading innovation and exploring ideas that may not yet be on industry’s immediate horizon.”
This philosophy has led the College of Engineering to work with industry partners to identify where BME student training could improve, then adding new options to develop knowledge, such as new AI certifications.
The article also highlights research in medical robotics, relationships between neuroscience and eyesight, solutions for preventing surgical problems, and even medical cybersecurity at partners across the state including Georgia Tech, Emory University, Augusta University, the Medical College of Georgia and Mercer University.
Looking ahead to the University of Georgia School of Medicine’s opening this upcoming fall, biomedical research at UGA is sure to continue growing.
“We are in a growth phase,” said Silva. “We are being very intentional about where we are investing and building our program. I’m looking forward to what the future brings us.”
