What is the Discovering Engineering at UGA Internship Program?

The College of Engineering's Discovering Engineering at UGA Program is launching a three-week summer internship pathway program for high school students interested in STEM and Engineering.

Under the guidance of Jaime Camelio, Ph.D.Associate Dean for Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and Hunter Halloran, Research Engineer, participating students will engage in research at our I-STEM Factory, interact with fellow on-campus interns, attend professional development workshops, learn from esteemed faculty, visit engineering labs and facilities, and gain exposure to the various fields in STEM and Engineering. All participating interns will be expected to work 30 hours per week with compensation of $12 per hour. 

Upon completion of the Discovering Engineering at UGA Internship Program, interns will submit the following: 
  • A three-page report discussing lessons and experiences throughout the internship
  • A team project and presentation

 

Why Discovering Engineering at UGA?

Discovering Engineering at UGA interns will have the opportunity to conduct hands-on research under the direction of a UGA faculty member and receive additional mentoring, all while being paid.

This program will also provide opportunitites for interns to:
  • Network with faculty and students who are conducting research of interest,
  • Increase proficiency in technical communications,
  • Gain experience in working toward future career goals, with a particular focus on post-high school education,
  • Present research through the Discover Engineering final presentation, and 
  • Enjoy social activities with other Discover Engineering students.

 

When does the program take place?

Monday, June 5 – Friday, June 23, 2023

 

Where will the program be held?

The College of Engineering's Driftmier Engineering Center located on UGA's Athens, Georgia campus.

 

What will Discovering Engineering interns be doing?

Interns are expected to: 
  • Commit to the full three-week internship program,
  • Work and live on-campus for the duration of the program (except weekends when interns will return home), 
  • Conduct supervised research in STEM and Engineering,
  • Complete a written essay about the internship and learning experiences, and
  • Prepare a final team presentation.

 

What are the eligibility requirements?

Interns are required to:
  • Have completed their sophomore year in high school, 
  • Be 16 years of age or older by the program start date (June 5, 2023), 
  • Possess a sincere interest in the scientific exploration of STEM and Engineering,  
  • Have completed one high school science course (including laboratory) and one semester of algebra, and
  • Submit a completed application which includes an essay and two teacher-provided recommendation letters.
Other preferred qualities: 
  • Involvement with a Lego League Community 
  • Involvement with a First Robotics Community 
  • Attends a STEM and/or Engineering institute, academy or high school
  • Involvement with Chess Community

Application Timeline:
  • Applications open: Wednesday, March 1, 2023
  • Application submission deadline: Monday, March 27, 2023 
  • Interviews: Tuesday, March 28 – Friday, March 31, 2023 
  • Selection notification: Tuesday, April 4, 2023 
  • Enrollment deadline: Friday, April 14, 2023
Program Dates: 
  • Monday, June 5. 2023: Program Start, Move In, and Welcome with Deans and Faculty
  • Monday, June 19, 2023: Juneteenth – The University of Georgia will be closed and interns will no be on campus this day 
  • Friday, June 23, 2023: Program End
