Mark Eiteman has been appointed interim chair of the School of Chemical, Materials, and Biomedical Engineering, effective June 1.
James Warnock, founding chair of the School of Chemical, Materials, and Biomedical Engineering, will transition from his role at the UGA College of Engineering to the position of associate dean in the UGA Morehead Honors College.
“I want to thank James for his leadership as the founding chair for the School of Chemical, Materials, and Biomedical Engineering,” said College of Engineering dean Don Leo. “He assumed his pivotal role shortly after the school was formed and successfully led the faculty, staff, and students through a period of significant growth.”
Eiteman, who joined UGA’s faculty in 1991, is a distinguished scholar and fellow of two professional societies, a senior member of the National Academy of Inventors, and a recognized leader in undergraduate and graduate education. He played a crucial role in the creation of the biochemical engineering degree program at UGA prior to the formation of the college. Additionally, he has taught and engaged in research in Chennai, India at Anna University and IIT-Madras. Notably, Eiteman was awarded UGA Inventor of the Year in 2014.
Eiteman received his M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Virginia and his B.S. from Virginia Tech, all in chemical engineering.
“Dr. Eiteman’s exceptional qualifications make him the ideal leader during this transitional phase for the school and college,” said Leo. “We are deeply appreciative of his willingness to step into the role of interim chair.”
Over the upcoming year, Eiteman will work closely with the interim dean of the college and the faculty, staff, and students of the school to sustain the positive momentum in teaching, research, and service that has occurred over the past several years.
