What is your favorite thing about being a student at UGA?
The people! I’ve met an amazing group of people and am grateful for how supportive they are. My college days would be a forgotten memory without them.
Why did you choose engineering?
I was originally a pre-med student and spent a lot of time contemplating about my future. I didn’t like the idea of being in school for so long before joining the medical field. I was eager to learn practical skills and apply them in a real-world application.
Why is it important for the university to have a diverse community?
A diverse community reminds me of home. Growing up in Norcross, a culturally rich and diverse area, I was surrounded by people from many different backgrounds. It provides me comfort and a sense of belonging.
What has been the greatest challenge you have faced while at UGA, and how did you overcome it?
The greatest challenge has been the feeling of falling behind. Most of my friends have already graduated in past years and are now working. Comparison is definitely the thief of joy. To overcome it, I focus on my own journey and move at my own pace.
What have you learned that has made a difference for you?
You can’t make it through engineering alone. I’ve always been — and still am — an introverted person. I prefer working and studying on my own rather than in groups. But I quickly learned that most of the engineering classes I took were designed to encourage me to work together with other students.
Who has helped you become a successful student at UGA?
My friends I’ve made at UGA! They have motivated me to do well in my classes, getting involved in clubs, and attending conferences. The long hours that I’ve spent in the circuits lab are more fun and less tedious with them around.
What is your favorite spot on campus and why?
My favorite spot on campus is the small turtle pond by the ecology building. It’s a quiet place to take a breather and unwind. Plus the turtles are very cute!
What has been your favorite class at UGA?
Some people might be surprised by my answer, but my favorite class was Design Methodology. Each week was definitely stressful, but it was one of the few classes where I had the chance to apply my technical skills and see them come to life in a functioning product.
What has been your best memory at UGA?
I remember walking to the bus stop and saw a cow in the middle of Tate Plaza. It was so random, but it definitely made my morning. Unfortunately, I did not get to pet the cow.
What advice do you have for younger students who wish to pursue engineering?
Learn to be proactive! It might seem like a basic skill, but it’s a crucial foundation for networking and getting involved. Being proactive helps build confidence in how you present yourself and interact with others. It applies to everything from taking the lead in group projects, to asking questions in class, and even introducing yourself to a company representative.
How do you hope to impact society with your engineering degree?
I hope to apply my practical skills and knowledge in order to give back to the community. Whether it’s through my job or acts of service, I wish to be involved in meaningful efforts that uplifts others.
