“I am excited to join the College of Engineering and contribute to its integration into UGA’s innovation initiatives,” said Camelio. “The College, UGA and Athens offer a unique ecosystem to integrate learning, research, innovation and entrepreneurship as a key economic development driver.”

Camelio’s research interests include intelligent manufacturing systems, cyber-physical security for manufacturing, and data mining and statistical learning applications for manufacturing processes and systems. During his tenure at Virginia Tech, he founded the Center for Innovation Based Manufacturing. This center worked to enhance the commercialization potential of basic university research and to expand current manufacturing research to non-traditional areas such as cyber-physical security and human-centric manufacturing. He also served as the Chief Technology Officer for the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing from 2016 to 2019. More recently, he led the development of a new learning factory as a platform for applied research, technology exploration, innovation, experiential learning, and industry training.

“Dr. Camelio will play a significant role in supporting faculty members as they develop and sustain research excellence,” said Donald Leo, dean of the College of Engineering. “His strong record of scholarship, teaching, and industry engagement will significantly enhance opportunities for innovation and entrepreneurship across the college.”
