What is your favorite thing about being a student at UGA?

My favorite thing is the opportunity to interact with a diverse population of students and learn from them.

Why did you choose engineering?

Mathematics in high school was one of my favorite subjects and I was good at it, as well. This helped me to choose engineering as my major. Furthermore, My late father used to work in the state electricity-providing department which motivated me to choose electrical engineering as my major.

Why is it important for the university to have a diverse community?

I believe each person is unique and their experience helps them to develop unique qualities. When we have a diverse community on campus it will help each of us to learn from each other’s qualities and grow as a whole community.

What has been the greatest challenge you have faced while at UGA, and how did you overcome it?

During my second semester here, the COVID-19 pandemic started and I lost my father back in Paksitan, which was the biggest challenge I have faced in my life. I went back to Pakistan and stayed with my mother and siblings for more than a year. Being the eldest son in my family, I provided support to my mother and siblings to bear this loss. I realized my father wants (or will be happy) for us to grow as good human beings and I started working on that.

What have you learned that has made a difference for you?

I have learned (or am still learning) that life is short and unpredictable. So instead of wasting time on blaming things, we should try to bring some positive change in our surroundings using the resources we have.

Who has helped you become a successful student at UGA?

My parent’s support, my friend’s (Qammar u zaman) motivations, and my Professor Dr. Fred R. Beyette Jr. have helped me to be a successful student at UGA.

What area is your research focused?

I am working on Brain Computer Interface and its applications for the betterment of humankind. One of the applications I am currently working on is the ‘Fatigue analysis in assembly line workers using their Brain electric signals.’

What is your favorite spot on campus and why?

I like most of the campus, specifically Lake Herrick is one of my favorite spots. I like jogging there early in the morning and sometimes evening walks with friends and sometimes I spend some time seeing the stars during night time. It is very peaceful for me.

What has been your best memory at UGA?

So many memories I can’t rank them, but one thing common among all of these memories is interacting with others.

What advice do you have for younger students who wish to pursue engineering?

The good thing about engineering is that as its demand increases, it brings more developments for humankind. If you like it, then pursue it and feel proud of yourself. But don’t forget to enjoy your life as a human being first.

How do you hope to impact society with your engineering degree?

My current research work is focused on bringing some good change in society using engineering knowledge and I will continue to use my engineering knowledge for the betterment of humankind.
