Eduardo Silva, Ph.D.

Incoming Professor and Chair, School of Chemical, Materials, and Biomedical Engineering

Dr. Eduardo A. Silva is a Professor and Chair of the School of Chemical, Materials, and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Georgia, Athens. His research focuses on the interface of biomaterials, drug and gene delivery, and regenerative medicine, with a primary emphasis on engineering vascular and lymphatic networks to treat ischemic diseases. By combining polymer science, cell biology, and translational engineering, his team develops material platforms that control the spatial and temporal presentation of bioactive cues to guide tissue repair.

Before joining UGA, Dr. Silva was Professor of Bioengineering at the University of Stavanger, Norway, and Associate Professor in Biomedical Engineering at the University of California, Davis, where he also served as Vice-Chair of the BME department. He earned his Ph.D. in Bioengineering from the University of Porto, Portugal, while working at Harvard University under the mentorship of Prof. David Mooney, followed by postdoctoral training at Harvard and a Technology Development Fellowship at the Harvard Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering.

Dr. Silva has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed publications and holds five patents. His contributions have garnered widespread recognition in the scientific community, with his publications frequently referenced in the biomaterials and regenerative medicine literature and featured on journal covers and in mainstream media. He has delivered over 45 invited lectures worldwide and secured continuous extramural funding from the NIH, American Heart Association, and other funding agencies. Dr. Silva is an elected Board Member of the European Tissue Repair Society and has been recognized with honors, including the Biomaterials Science Emerging Investigator Award and selection to the National Academy of Engineering’s Frontiers of Engineering Education Symposium.
