UGA ChampCar team triumphs at NCM Motorsports Park in Bowling Green, Kentucky

UGA Motorsports' ChampCar on the race trackDuring the weekend of March 15, the University of Georgia Motorsports ChampCar Endurance Racing Team traveled to Kentucky to compete in the highly competitive ChampCar Series event at NCM Motorsports Park. Piloting their 2003 BMW 330i, the team demonstrated unwavering determination, technical expertise, and a strong commitment to excellence in what proved to be a weekend full of unexpected challenges and achievements.

The event was originally scheduled as a two-day endurance competition, with an eight-hour race set for the first day. However, inclement weather led to the cancellation of Saturday’s race. Undeterred, the team refocused their efforts and prepared for Sunday’s demanding seven-hour competition, where they delivered an outstanding performance that left a lasting impression on the field. Against a backdrop of strong competition and unpredictable conditions, the UGA ChampCar Team secured an impressive first-place finish in their class (out of 15), and third place overall (out of 38). The team’s success did not go unnoticed, as they were interviewed by the event commentators, highlighting their dedication and achievements. This recognition further underscored their hard work, resilience, and commitment to advancing the program and engineering excellence.

This latest victory marks a significant milestone for the UGA ChampCar Team as they continue to build momentum after years of perseverance and problem-solving. Their endurance racing journey has not been without challenges—two years ago, persistent mechanical issues prevented the team from finishing their race. However, their fortunes began to turn last year at ChampCar’s grueling 14-hour event at Micheline Road Atlanta, in Braselton, GA. Despite facing hours of mechanical setbacks, the team showcased remarkable resilience, completing an impressive 208 laps, and being checkered for the first time in their racing. These experiences have only strengthened their resolve to refine their strategy, enhance their vehicle, and achieve even greater success in the future.

What once began as an ambitious project has developed into a program with immense potential. With each race, the UGA ChampCar Team is proving that they are not just competitors but serious contenders in endurance racing. As they look ahead, the team, alongside the help of Dr. Mativo, remains dedicated to refining their strategy, enhancing their vehicle, and continuing to bring home outstanding results.

The team would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the College of Engineering, faculty members, ChampCar Officials, and sponsors whose unwavering support has been instrumental in making these accomplishments possible. This is only the beginning of what promises to be a highly successful and growing program.
