With nearly 30 faculty and student delegates, the University of Georgia College of Engineering was well represented at this month’s Transportation Research Board Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C.

Part of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, the Transportation Research Board (TRB) “mobilizes expertise, experience, and knowledge to anticipate and solve complex transportation-related challenges,” engaging engineers, scientists, transportation researchers, and practitioners from the public and private sectors and academia.

Held each January, the TRB Annual Meeting convenes thousands of transportation professionals from around the world, with a program covering all modes of transportation and sessions and workshops addressing topics of interest to policy makers, administrators, practitioners, researchers, and representatives from government, industry, and academic institutions.

In 2012, Juneau Construction Company Professor in Civil Engineering Stephan Durham was the first from the University of Georgia to attend the conference, presenting two papers. Participation has since grown to over two dozen UGA students and faculty, presenting a total of 20 papers at this year’s conference.

In conjunction with the meeting, the UGA College of Engineering has hosted the Annual Georgia Transportation Reception since 2018, inviting colleagues and supporters, including the state congressional delegation in D.C., the Georgia Department of Transportation, collaborators at peer institutions, and faculty and students.

“UGA’s presence at this year’s TRB Annual Meeting reflects a research enterprise that is rapidly accelerating in both scale and impact, solidifying our stature as a national leader in transportation innovation,” said Durham. “I’m proud to see our faculty and students nationally recognized for their expertise in roadway and bridge asset management, smart mobility, connected and automated vehicles, and traffic safety analytics. Their work not only advances the state of the practice, but positions UGA to be a trusted resource whose solutions strengthen the safety, resilience, and efficiency of transportation systems.”
