UGA launches new undergraduate certificate in aerospace engineering

A rocket launchUniversity of Georgia undergraduate students with an interest in aerospace engineering now have an opportunity to pursue a certificate in the area.

The undergraduate certificate in aerospace engineering is designed to provide a focused, multidisciplinary education. Students will engage with coursework that spans the design, development, and implementation of cutting-edge aerospace technologies. Available to students majoring in mechanical engineering, computer systems engineering, and electrical and electronics engineering, the certificate program allows students to tailor their engineering studies toward aerospace-focused applications.

“The demand for more aerospace engineering curriculum at the college has steadily increased over the years,” said Ramana Pidaparti, professor in the College of Engineering and lead for the new certificate program. “We are pleased to now offer a formal certificate in the area that equips students with the tools to excel in the aerospace field.”

Industry demand and career opportunities

The certificate comes at a time when aerospace engineering is seeing significant growth, with local, national, and international employers actively seeking graduates with skills in aerospace technologies. Students completing the certificate will be well-positioned for careers with major aerospace companies or government agencies.

Learning beyond the classroom

In addition to courses, students pursuing the certificate will benefit from experiential learning experiences and networking opportunities. Senior-level students will complete the program with an aerospace-related capstone design project, tackling a real-world aerospace challenge using the concepts and skills they’ve learned and practiced during their undergraduate studies. The UGA Student Chapter of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) provides an additional platform for professional development, offering students the opportunity to attend meetings, field trips, competitions, and social events.

“This new certificate is an exciting development for UGA and our engineering students,” said Stephan Durham, the college’s interim dean. “It reflects our ongoing commitment to innovation and our mission to provide students with a hands-on education and experiences that better prepare them for for their future careers.”
