From Monday, February 19, to Friday, February 23, the University of Georgia College of Engineering celebrated Engineers Week, joining in the nationwide celebration organized by the DiscoverE Foundation. The week was packed with various activities aimed at highlighting the importance of engineering and honoring engineers’ contributions to society.
Key events throughout the week included speaker events and professional development opportunities for students. A highlight was the banquet held at the West End Zone of Sanford Stadium, featuring a keynote address by Jonathan Jones (BSBCE ’13), Material Development Director, Global Kids Footwear, Nike. Other speakers from the week included:
- Chase Culler (BSEE ’17), Product Owner at Cricket Wireless
- Ryan Devine (BSBE ’17, PhD ’22), Research and Development Product Engineer at Owens & Minor
- Brendon Mack (BSCE ’17), Bridge Design Associate Engineer at Gresham Smith
- Dan Kim, Director of Recruiting at Rivian and several other representatives from Rivian
- Joel Stenson, UPS, Senior Vice President of Operations Technology at UPS
One of the most anticipated aspects of the week was the student club competition, which saw participation from 17 student organizations. Events included an ice cream making challenge, a “driving blind” challenge, trivia, and a balloon car making challenge. The Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers (SASE) ultimately secured the top spot, followed by the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) in second place, and the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) in third place.
