Designing a plastic product with its end-of-life in mind could have a big impact, reports The Guardian.
“So many issues are caused downstream from not considering this point in a product’s life cycle,” said Jenna Jambeck, an assistant professor of environmental engineering in the University of Georgia College of Engineering.
Jambeck was lead author of a report released earlier this year that estimated between 4.7 million and 12.7 million tons of plastic made its way into the world’s oceans in 2010, with a best estimate of 8 million tons.
