First Year Scholars Program

The First Year Scholars program supports students actively pursuing an engineering degree who demonstrate a financial need and demonstrates an interest in promoting underrepresented and underserved groups in engineering. The program provides a $4000, non-renewable scholarship and programming support via the College of Engineering Office of Student Success (OSS). Scholars work closely with OSS members to explore continued financial support for the remainder of their academic career. This includes support for paid co-op or internship opportunities, exploration of additional scholarships, and more. An application is required and due by April 14th @11:59pm. Students will be notified of receipt of the scholarship before May 1st or May 15th (UGA’s commitment deposit deadline, out-of-state & in-state deadlines differ). Recipients receive:

  • $4,000 non-renewable scholarship
  • Academic, experiential, and student success support via the College of Engineering Office of Student Success
  • Participation in a cohort / learning community
    • First Year Odyssey for Scholars | Engineering Exploration, Leadership, & Service
      • taught by Assistant Dean for Student Success & Outreach, Dr. Stephan Durham
    • Peer Mentorship

To qualify for the scholarship, students must:

  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Demonstrates an interest in promoting underrepresented and underserved groups in engineering
  • Enroll full time at UGA in an intended engineering major
  • Actively pursue a College of Engineering major
    • Must take academic courses during the fall and spring terms that contribute to academic progression in the engineering major of choice
